Day 1
In Adelaide, "the festival city", wander the streets of North Adelaide and admire the architectural design, parklands surrounding the city and historic churches.

Dine along Gouger Street, famous for innovative and modern food, or try your luck at the Adelaide Casino.

Day 2
Join an early morning tour at Central Markets where you can sample delights from around the world.
In the Adelaide Hills wander through the village of Hahndorf, a German village with choices with a German influence.

Or visit a wildlife sanctuary on the outskirts of Adelaide.

The Barorra Valley and the Adelaide Hills

Less than a one hour drive north-east of Adelaide, the Barossa Valley is a captivating wine-growing area. Grapes were first grown in the broad, shallow valley in the 1840's by Silesian immigrants, who imported their own traditions which can still be seen in the solid, bluestone architecture, in the tall spires of the Lutheran churches, and in the continental-style butchers' and pastry shops in the towns of Nurioopta and Tanunda.

Immediately to the east of Adelaide, the green slopes woodlands, orchards and vineyards of the Adelaide Hills give the area a European feel. Add country markets, several wonderful restaurants and some delightful historic towns and you have the perfect material for a day tour, or a more leisurely two to three days' drive.

Return to the Tanunda road, continue towards Nurioopta and turn left to Seppelts Winery via Maranaga, one of the prettiest corners of the Barossa. The traditional bluestone architecture of the Barossa can be seen at its best in Seppelts Winery, one of the most magnificent in the country. The winery and its splendid grounds are a tribute to the industry and enthusiasm of those early Seppelts. Fortified wines are a specialty; this is the only winery in the world that has vintage ports for every year as far back as 1878. Tours of the winery operate daily.

Continue through Eden Valley and Mount Pleasant to the delightful village of Hahndorf, a picture-perfect village founded more than 150 years ago by German settlers. The main street is filled with antique and arts and crafts gallerie - ideal for souvenir shopping.

Just off the Adlgate-Strathalbyn road, Warrawong Sanctuary is a wildlife sanctuary that is home to platypusess, kangaroos, wallabies and bandicoots, which thrive in their native habitat.

Return to Adelaide via the summit of Mount Lofty.
